Barry has a strong military background of 10 years in the Royal Australian Navy establishing a strong sense of discipline and leadership.
The transition from the Navy to Nursing in 1993 resulted in an easy transferability of these leadership skills and the application to a clinical setting and ultimately responsible for my ongoing career success.
Entering the Aged Care sector as a Personal Carer Worker and quickly working his way to Clinical Manager then Residential Manager, Barry discovered a passion for finding new ways to better the care and services for the elderly, relatives and employees.
With a talent for identifying weaknesses in systems and processes and a natural curiosity to pursue alternative solutions, reduction of risk, innovation, and continuous improvement led me to the role of Quality Manager in 2008.
Barry has been fortunate to work for visionary organisations that firmly believe in the principles of continuous improvement, identifying and reducing risk and the courage to explore innovation.
With this opportunity to explore innovation Barry has always been an active influence that has resulted in a respected reputation throughout the Australian Aged Care Quality Agency (AACQA) with the achievement of obtaining three National Better Practice Awards; MyHUB, Bright Light Therapy, and Ageing Aboard.
Always with an acute awareness of potential and actual risks in both a financial, reputational, clinical and workplace setting I am naturally inclined to consider the consequences of solutions and decisions before applying them.
The continual review of Clinical systems and processes with the goal of improving resident outcomes through a blend of continuous improvement and the striving for excellence in clinical care and services in a climate of responsibility and accountability is the hallmarks of Clinical Governance.
Platforms such as MyHUB, clinical care reports, and monthly system health checks are applications of Clinical Governance the outcome of which culminate in the monthly board report.
MyHUB, by far Barry's most significant achievement, consolidates critical clinical information into one view allowing the Clinical leadership team to make timely clinical analysis and instigate interventions efficiently. MyHUB also provides vital clinical indicators; Falls, Medication incidents, weight loss, and infections both at a site level and organisational, information that is accessible by the carer to a board member.
