Residents Delivering Meals on Wheels. Our aim was simple; create a Montessori based program that strengthened connections between our resident’s and the local community, which would benefit everyone involved. As a small rural hospital we offer many services under the one roof – acute and urgent care, residential aged care, (allied health practitioners, GP office, community based groups) and home support services. We have a well-established Meals on Wheels program (MOW), with volunteers delivering nutritious lunches from the hospital kitchen to members of the community, who also greatly benefit from the social contact. With the ageing population in town we had noticed an increase in service demand, which unfortunately coincided with diminishing numbers of volunteers. We had also been reviewing our leisure and lifestyle program to try and strengthen community connections with our residents, as many of them have lived locally their whole lives, and are part of families that have been in the area for generations. We saw a real potential for both the residents and the community members using the MOW service to benefit greatly by integrating the two together – hence residents delivering MOW began.   Why we did it In our residential aged care facility we adopt the Montessori approach for our residents where we can.
